[In trying to achieve a red 'Caroline Testout', Wilhelm Kordes II came up with 'Cathrine Kordes', sort of a red 'Caroline Testout', but not red enough. So he crossed 'Cathrine Kordes' with 'W.E. Chaplin'.] The result was 'Crimson Glory', dark red, very fragrant, soon grown everywhere as the best red rose in the world. It was introduced in 1935.

W. E. Chaplin: Another large high-centred crimson bloom which deepens but does not "blue." It is moderately fragrant and of very good form and substance, but subject to mildew and "balls" in poor seasons.

A Glossary of Roses
W. E. Chaplin (Hybrid Tea) is an excellent crimson rose which does not discolour or damage in wet weather, its very large high centred globular flowers being very profusely produced from robust, upright and branching plants with much deep-green foliage.

Frank Penn.  The Old and the New.
W. E. Chaplin is a better show bloom than Crimson Glory. When well grown it is of good size and shape and has a delightful brilliance - one of the finest points in a good show Rose. Unfortunately, it has little fragrance.
