HT. The Puritan (Bennet 1888). Large, like "Merveille de Lyon", double, fine form, pure white; bud shaded light yellow while expanding, then passing to pure white. Valuable due to its fragrance reminiscent of magnolia. Very floriferous shrub.

Hybrid Perpetual Roses. 
The Puritan. A cross between Mabel Morrison and Devoniensis. The buds when opening are slightly yellow, changing to a pure white as they expand.

LES ROSES EN DÉCEMBRE.- Peu d'horticulteurs s'occupent serieusement de la culture forcée du rosier; peu songent à vouloir faire la concurrence a l'importation faite sur nos places publiques des roses du midi. Dans ces derniers temps, les abords des gares a Bruxelles étaient inondés de fleurs de la rose Safrano, provenant de Cannes et de Nice. L'American Florist nous apprend qu'en Amérique les horticultuers osent tenter de grandes entreprises. L'etablissement Strauss et Cie, à Washington, a couvert de vitrage un terrain de deux hectares et demi et y a plante 80,000 rosiers qui depuis le 15 décembre jusqu'à mois de mai auront a fournir chaque jour de 10,000 a 25,000 roses. Un quart de ces rosiers appartiennent à la rose rouge nouvelle Wooton, les autres sont les variétés Beauty, Puritan, Madame Hoste, La Perle, La France et quelques autres.
