Terence Reeves-Smyth contributed this information: the palace at Alupka in the Crimea was only begun in the late 1820s. It was built by Count Vorontsov - there is a pink climbing rose at Alupka named after his wife and called Rosa 'Countess Vorontsov'. It dates to the 1830s and I fancy that the R. 'Alupka' is of the same date. These roses were bred in the botanic gardens at Nikita outside Yalta in the Crimea.
