As the Gallicas are hardy and of stately growth and presence, they are still worth a place in roseries, or in spare spaces where continuous bloom is not the chief object, either as standards or bushes. The following are very beautiful, and can hold their own on the show-stands where they occasionally appear with the best:

Comtesse Chabrilland, by Marest, a raiser who has given us too few Roses, came out in 1859. This is a perfect model of symmetry, though scarcely large enough to satisfy the craving for monstrosity which is the failing....

The Hybrid Provence, a cross between the previously named [Provence roses] and the Gallica, are now little cultivated. They are all pale colours; Emérance is pale lemon; Princess Clementine, paper white. Both the above should be grown on their own roots in well-manured soil, and require close pruning.
