ROSE GARDENS

At Parliament House

SCENE OF BEAUTY
Parliamentary Gardens at present
are looking their best and in them-
selves constitute a beautiful portion
of Nature's horticultural show. It is
expected that the two sections of the
National Rose Garden contained in
this area will be filled during the next
planting season for roses. Many offers
have been received from various parts
of Australia and it is expected that
all the best varieties of roses grown
in Australia will be represented.
Among the donations are two types
of roses which have been produced by
Mr. Alister Clark, who is regarded as
one of the leading authorities on roses
in Australia. He has been respon-
sible for the creation of some of the
best varieties grown in Australia, in-
cluding the "Sunny South," one of the
most decorative roses in the garden.
Some little time ago, Mr. Clark
produced an open petal rose which
he named "Mary Guthrie" and also a
rose of very fine quality which he
called "Mrs. Frank Guthrie" in
honour of Senator Guthrie's wife.
After seeing the gardens in Can-
berra, Miss Mary Guthrie decided to
present 48 "Mary Guthrie" roses for
the parliamentary section of the
National Rose Garden, and Senator
Guthrie, not to be outdone, has
offered to present 48 of the "Mrs.
Frank Guthrie" varlety.
