Dr. A. S. Thomas. The Newer Roses in Victoria. ‘Lady Dallas Brooks’ HT. (Downes, not released). Is a distinct and attractive sport of ‘Mme. A. Meilland’. The colour varies from a pinkish-chrome yellow to a biscuit pink and is not unlike that of ‘Numa Fay’ and ‘Bonne Nouvelle’. The first blooms were huge and malformed, but those that followed have been excellent. A great new double-purpose variety.

Meilland’ and originated in the garden of Mrs. Rupert Downes, O.B.E., one of the vice-patronesses of the National Rose Society of Victoria. It resembles the parent, of course, in every respect except colour, which is deep salmon pink with apricot shadings.

Mrs. Rupert Downes, Melbourne, tells of an interesting variations:
My very small garden now has 200 rose plants. I took out two small lawns each side of the front path and planted 45 ‘Madame A. Meilland’ bush roses. These bloomed continuously for months – glorious blooms, sometimes clear yellow, other times with pink edge. One day I found a pale pink rose on one of the bushes. As many blooms of ‘Mme. A. Meilland’ are heavily edged with pink, I didn’t take much notice, but more and more pale pink roses flowered on this shoot. I realised that I might have a sport, and sent buds to a nurseryman in December, 1953. I am informed that the buds have taken, and that the growth is healthy. I can scarcely wait to see the result.
