Rosa zalana Wiesb. is a Central European species of Caninae rose found east of the Carpathian mountains from the Baltic to the Black Sea. It's a climbing rose and Vladimir Ježovič who photographed it near Šášov castle in central Slovakia commented Rosa zalana has "glandular leaves with special resinous scent" and indeed it does. Foliar fragrance is a wonderful experience often overlooked with roses since most people only smell the flowers but never rub their leaves. Photographed May 15, 2021 at Rose Woods.

Rosa zalana was named in 1879 by the Austrian Jesuit priest and botanist Johann Baptist Wiesbaur. He collected in his home country and Central Europe. His epithet "zalana" is possibly a Polish word which translates to "überflutet" in German meaning "flooded".
My plant came from the U.C. Berkeley Botanic Garden in 1993. Photographed May 15, 2021 at Rose Woods in the Mayacmas Mtns. near Petrified Forest, California.
